About the Item

Deriving his style from late Post-Impressionist precedents, the midcentury French painter and lithographer Pierre Boudet is known for his lively, picturesque scenes of French street life. Born in Versailles, France, Boudet studied under the popular portraitist and self-declared inventor of the pin-up, Jean-Gabriel Domergue. A widely traveled artist, in addition to scenes of Paris, Versailles, and Normandy, Boudet’s oeuvre also includes paintings of Italy and Morocco, tending to focus on the daily leisure activities of city denizens. Although made with a signature freehand, sketchy brushwork ostensibly meant to convey a sense of naïve abandon, a closer look at Boudet’s work suggests a more methodical approach. The artist’s frequent reuse of nearly identical figurative compositions indicates that he did not, in fact, make most of his paintings en plein-air—as their style might suggest—but that they were probably the result of artful studio recreation based on earlier sketches. Such is likely the case with Plage de Trouville, a painting of one of Normandy’s fashionable beach resorts with a longstanding pedigree as an artistic subject. Trouville’s trajectory as a locale of artistic interest began in 1825, when Charles Mozin started painting the seaside town, introducing it to a metropolitan Parisian audience. In the course of the 19th century, with the rise of a new bourgeois leisure class and the development of the railroad, Trouville became an increasingly accessible attraction for tourists and artists alike. In addition to Mozin, the town frequently found itself in the canvases of artists like Eugène Boudin and Claude Monet, for whom the novel and thoroughly modern phenomenon of seaside resorts held a profound fascination. Arising out of this artistic lineage, Plage de Trouville presents a scene of sprawling beachgoers sunbathing on the sand, with the beach’s signature pair of lighthouses visible on the distant horizon. Framed by colored tents on either side, the central group of bikini-clad reclining beachgoers in the foreground make way for a lively scene of tourists boating and disporting themselves in the background. Over all of this, a smattering of seagulls, depicted in a succession of quick brushstrokes, populate the sky, creating something of an abstract color field covering more than half of the painting. Several other paintings by Boudet have nearly identical figural arrangements, with considerable compositional variations in each. Executed years apart, these reiterations indicate that the sense of freewheeling spontaneity that Boudet so aptly achieves in Plage de Trouville is a worked and studied effect, rather than a truly naïve technique.
