pietro della valle
Di Pietro della Valle, Landscape with fisherman

About the Item

Pietro Della Valle (Livorno, 1819 - Florence, 1880) Landscape with shepherdesses and fisherman, 1846 Oil on canvas, 34 x 50 cm Framed, 64 x 69 cm Pietro Della Valle (Leghorn 1819 - Florence 1880) was a painter, decorator, landscape painter and master painter. Brother of the architect Angiolo and the painter Giuseppe, he comes from a well-known family of Leghorn artists: the Della Valle family was known, at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, not only in Italy but also internationally for their extraordinary artistic qualities, as evidenced by the various commissions the family members received from the rulers of Russia, Denmark and Prussia. Pietro della Valle is known not only for his pictorial works but also for his elegant compositions in scagliola, which were particularly appreciated by Grand Tour travelers. Among the most successful objects in terms of Della Valle's scagliola production is certainly the table with stories from Columbus' public life, exhibited in Florence in 1860. In terms of pictorial production, the artist prefers landscape scenes, often animated by the presence of figures at work. The characters in the Leghorn artist's works move through the beautiful landscapes of the Tuscan countryside, illuminated by a warm and reassuring light. Among the painter's most famous works are Il naufragio di un brigantino sulle coste della Spezia, which was a great success with the public and critics at the 1844 Florence Exposition, the large Marina presented at the 1876 New York Exposition, and La Fortezza di Montepulciano, a painting of felicitous naturalistic taste and luministic sensitivity, dated 1866 and preserved in the Modern Art Room of the city's Palazzo Comunale. A beautiful view of the Tuscan countryside is depicted in the painting in question. In this valley furrowed by a placidly flowing river, two young women and a little girl in traditional dress relax in the shade of trees surrounded by a few heads of their flock. Meanwhile, a fisherman hoists, with great effort, his net. The warm, vivid daylight radiates the scene, making it especially lively. In tone and pictorial technique, Della Valle's work channels itself in the tradition of the Florentine landscape painters of the first half of the 19th century, foremost among them Giovanni Signorini.

Pair of landscapes Painted by Antonio Francesco Peruzzini
Located in Milan, IT
Antonio Francesco Peruzzini (Ancona, 1643/1646 - Milan, 1724) Rural landscape with river and village center Rural landscape with river and tower (2) Oil on canvas, cm 108 x 62 Expert opinion Prof. Emilio Negro Recognizable in the present pair of paintings is the hand of what Mina Gregori called "the most original and path-breaking landscape painter to emerge in the late seventeenth century," namely Antonio Francesco Peruzzini. Finally identified by Arslan in 1959 as such a "Perugino," author of a St. Sebastian in a private Milanese collection, Peruzzini has in recent times been reevaluated from his former qualification as a mere subordinate of Lissandrino (Alessandro Magnasco), in comparison with whom he turns out to be an excellent coadjutor and original landscape painter. A distant mountainous horizon, of frozen vigor, is proposed in both canvases interspersed with a spindly tree in the background that screws swirlingly to the sky. The anti-academicism and nonconformism that characterized Peruzzini's entire career appear evident here and justify in retrospect his choice of such figurative collaborators as Magnasco and Sebastiano Ricci...
