Ramon Dilley
1933 - Spanish
Le château d’Artigny
Signed “Dilley 90” (lower right)
Signed and titled “Ramon Dilley / Le château d’Artigny” (en verso)
Oil on board laid on canvas
This compelling oil on canvas was composed by the famed Spanish painter Ramon Dilley. His captivating oeuvre captures fashionable French socialites in chic settings, all in his highly distinctive Post-Impressionist style. The present work is no exception, capturing elegant women lazing before a historic French estate, with one figure leaning on a fine automobile. Donning a colorful parasol and stylish clothing, Dilley’s subjects gaze away from the viewer. Celebrated for his canvases that bring together the elegant spirit of old France during the Belle Époque with a highly modern style and sensibility, Ramon Dilley highlights the grace of his feminine subjects in Le château d’Artigny.
Dilley’s choice of subject matter and technique recall the work of the famed painters Kees van Dongen and Jean-Pierre Cassigneul, particularly in his use of color and the elongation of his figures. Yet, Dilley’s works also recall a bygone age of poise and refinement that is distinctive to his output. Highly modern yet infinitely timeless, his canvasses are among the finest of their genre to be found today.
Gomez Ramon y Romero was born in Madrid in 1933. By 1936, his family fled to France in order to escape the ongoing civil war in Spain. Thereafter, he would spend most of his life in France, finding inspiration in the French avant-garde and celebrity scene. Under the patronage of the sculptor Paul Delmondo, he was admitted to the École du Louvre, where he honed his already impressive artistic skills. In the 1960s, he changed his name to "Dilley" under the advice of the art historian and auctioneer Maurice Rheims. Celebrated for the mix of old-world beauty and modern fashion in his works, Dilley's oeuvre is highly collectible. Examples can be found in many distinguished private collections around the world, including the collections of the Shah of Iran, Prince Rainier of Monaco, Princess Ana of Singapore and Valery Giscard d'Estaing.

Born in Leeds, this artist was trained as an architect but eventually found his calling in painting town scenes, landscapes, and interiors using both oil and watercolour. With a privileged upbringing thanks to his tobacco manufacturer father, he attended art school in Paris before studying under Fred Brown at the Royal College of Art.
In 1899, he married Hylda Matheson, but their honeymoon ended in tragedy with her untimely death. He eventually settled in Bedford Square, Brighton, during the 1910s and 1920s, but maintained a studio at 18 Fitzroy Street in London from 1915 onwards.
A prominent figure in the art world, he was a founder member and secretary of the Camden Town Group, a member of the New English Art Club, and one of the founding members of the London Group in 1913. He exhibited with the London Group until 1934, showcasing his work that often drew inspiration from his travels in Europe, which sometimes included the company of fellow artist Walter Sickert. Additionally, he painted extensively in London, Brighton, and Hove.
This artist also had a keen eye for collecting works by other artists, amassing an important collection that included pieces by Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard, Dufy, Gilman, Matthew Smith...
