Bathed in the soft and steamy light of the South of France, Raymond Thibesart returns to capture the essential nature of one his favorite seascape subjects, Villefranche-sur-Mer on the Côte d'Azur region of the French Riviera.
Raymond Thibesart developed a very personal pictorial language, from which we shall retain a masterful use of light and color, capturing the changing effects of the sun on landscapes, trees, flowers, haystacks and so on. His works reflect a meticulous observation of the atmosphere that emanates from each element of nature.
Thus, Thibesart finely depicts the cold light of winter or the vitality of springtime green. Endowed with great sensitivity, he manages to capture the ephemeral beauty that stands before him and transcribes it onto his canvas with poetry and serenity. In short, his landscape paintings are true odes to nature and light, inviting the viewer to contemplation and even reverie.
Raymond Thibesart was born into an affluent family on May 2nd, 1874. As a small child, Thibesart’s family moved to a suburb of Paris where the very young artist found a wealth of teachers and inspiration to pull from. Thibesart showed such proclivity for drawing at an early age, and had enough talent that famed impressionist Emile Boggio began giving him lessons when he was just 11 years old. Eventually, Thibesart began formal training at the Lycee Rollin in Paris, followed by studies at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian.
While working in Symbolism, Thibesart became a student of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art movements of his native France and began winning numerous medals in France, including the gold medal from the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1897. Thibesart then began his studies with the famed Impressionist Henri Martin for much of his early life. From Martin, he learned the technique of “plein air" painting who was a master of the discipline. Proficiency of this technique and its aesthetic, freed up the young artist, allowing him the ability to create amazingly beautiful light and shadow splayed across his trademark subjects which frequently included the landscapes of Italy, Switzerland, and the rest of mainland Europe.
Thibesart was especially enamored with the river Seine -- a subject that repeated itself again and again in his work. He was able to produce work into his old age, giving Thibesart a breadth and depth to his catalog that few other artists of his era can match.
This Post-Impressionist style would be the one he would become known for, achieving long-lasting fame that lasted long after the artist’s death in the 1960s.
Thibesart was extremely popular during his lifetime. He exhibited at almost every prestigious gallery in Paris and across Europe, including an extended exhibit at the Knoedler in Paris (1913 - 1927), the Georges Petit gallery in Paris 1930 and the Romanet Gallery in Algiers between 1942 and 1965. During his lifetime, his work also traveled to New York, Caracas, Holland and Japan which helped to cement his reputation as one of the most important Post-Impressionist painters of any era.
Thibesart had a warm and longstanding friendship with Claude Monet, and the two often shared methods and styles with each other whether through letters or in person. Eventually, their friendship led them to exchange paintings on each other’s birthdays. Thibesart’s pieces are often tranquil and beautiful, rich blues, translucent water, and the dazzling sparkle of the sun.

Raymond Thibesart
Raymond Thibésart was born into an affluent family in the town of Troyes, the historical capital of the Champagne region in France. Shortly afterward, the family moved to Enghiens-les-Bains, an attractive spa town to the North of Paris. It was here that they met the Boggios, a charismatic family who had just emigrated from Venezuela; Emilio Boggio, a talented Impressionist painter, became Thibésart's long-standing mentor and friend, encouraging his early promise and providing him with his first art lessons.
Thibésart began his formal training at the École des Beaux Arts and subsequently at the Académie Julian where he was taught by Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert Fleury. After art school, he maintained his friendship with Emilio Boggio and they both moved to Vaux sur Seine, northwest of Paris. They frequently traveled throughout Europe, including trips to Italy, Corsica and Switzerland. They were often joined by Henri Martin (1860–1943) who, like Thibesart, remained faithful to an Impressionist style for most of his life.
Thibésart lived a long life and painted prolifically, a favorite subject being blossoming trees on the banks of the Seine. It was only the loss of his sight at the age of 92 that put a halt to his artistic output, just two years before his death in 1968.
The artist exhibited throughout his life, notably at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1897 (he was awarded a silver medal in 1922), the Salon des Indépendants from 1905 and at the Salon d’Automne. Thibésart’s work can be found in public and private collections, including at the Musée de Troyes in his birthplace.

Ignacio Gil Sala, was a painter, bohemian character, adventurous and intrepid traveler who knew how to capture his eyes to that world with his painting.
