About the Item
Expressionist style encaustic landscape on green mountains against a stormy grey sky
"Approaching Storm" by Regina Quinn, made in 2024
oil paint and encaustic on panel
24 x 36 inches unframed, 26 x 37.5 inches with a natural wood floater frame
"Approaching Storm" is a horizontal landscape painting in encaustic and oil depicting a textural green foreground and a sky streaked with wispy clouds. Although from afar the painting is predominantly green and blue, upon closer inspection one can notice a spectrum of colors embedded in the textural surface of hardened encaustic wax (as evidenced by the detail images in this listing). The piece is signed on verso and framed in a simple dark brown wooden frame.
About the artist: After nearly three decades in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, Regina now lives in New York’s Northern Catskills. Although she is a New York City native, she has spent most of her adult life in the northern mountains which are a continuous source of inspiration for her work which is rooted in a deep connection to the natural world, combined with her sense of stewardship for the fragile balance that allows life to exist and thrive on this planet.
Regina holds a Special Studies in Fine Arts degree from Trinity College where she received the Peyser Art Award, first prize and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Vermont. She exhibits her work extensively in galleries, art centers and museums across the country and has several of her encaustic paintings included in the permanent collection of the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center, in Brooklyn, NY, and the Museum of Encaustic Art - Encaustic Art Institute in Santa Fe, NM. Regina teaches encaustic workshops internationally and serves on the Board of Directors of International Encaustic Artists. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the 2020 Faber Birren National Color Award and the 2021 Cooperstown Art Association’s Essential Art Grand Prize.
"I was struck by the luminosity and subtlety of Doug and Mike Starn’s encaustics in 2014, and immediately sensed that encaustic was my medium—one that could give voice to my aesthetic, my sensibility, and my quiet personality. I haven’t looked back. I work almost exclusively with encaustics and oils with beeswax, and recently began using those media over watercolor.
Beginning with watercolors on gessoed panels, I build opaque and transparent encaustic layers, carving and scratching into them with blades and knives creating depth and texture. Next, I apply oils mixed with beeswax, enhancing texture and luminosity. Layering, carving, scraping and incising allow earlier layers to emerge, much the way geological and weathering processes obscure and expose, and as visual memories come into focus even as they fade away."

Regina Quinn
The elegance of a fallen leaf on the forest floor, the eerie glow as morning fog lifts, the dynamic tension between abstraction and naturalism – these are the inspirations for Regina Quinn’s encaustic and oil paintings. A New York City native, Regina divides her time between New York’s Catskill Mountains and the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont where her work is influenced by the stark winters, lush springs, exuberant summers and vibrant autumns. Working in encaustics, she builds transparent and opaque layers, scrapes and scratches and incises to reveal and obscure, working towards the sense of awe and wonder she experiences daily in the natural world. Regina holds a Special Studies in Fine Arts bachelor’s degree from Trinity College where she received the Peyser Art Award, first prize and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Vermont. She has designed and painted sets for several Lyric Theater productions at Burlington, Vermont’s Flynn Theater for the Performing Arts and has worked as a muralist, graphic designer, and educator for 35 years. Regina is dedicated to sparking students’ creativity, innovation, and passion for environmental stewardship.

Opening Farm (Encaustic Monochromatic Pastoral Landscape in Earth Tones & White)
By Leigh Palmer
Located in Hudson, NY
Encaustic on board
10 x 12 inches
This monochromatic encaustic landscape on board was created by Hudson Valley-based artist Leigh Palmer. Once a hard edge realist painter, the artist eschews those details, letting the stroke of his brush and moody palette leave an abstract implication of the landscape. The main image is bordered by white to give the impression of a window.
About the artist:
In the Openings series, Palmer integrates the frame into the painting. This element contributes to the narrative, suggesting the viewer is inside looking out. We are not a part of the landscape, rather we are a peaceful witnesses to nature that will transcend even our own existence and continue to change with the seasons long after we have passed. We are romanced by Leigh Palmer's unique ability to pare down and find the true essence of the landscape, gently veiled through his own soul. We are proud to have exhibited his work since the inception of Carrie Haddad Gallery in 1991.
Today, the artist continues to work with both encaustic and oil paint. He is currently developing a new series in his studio right across the street from the gallery. We hope to reveal his new work to the public sometime in 2021.
Artist Statement:
My paintings are based on observation of the landscape in the Hudson River Valley where I live, and are improvised in the studio; the images are found or discovered in my memory of familiar places and developed during the painting process. Human beings do not appear, but their presence is felt in the marks left on the ground (furrows, fence rows, roads), and sometimes in the air (smoke, haze).
About the artist:
In 1987, Leigh Palmer moved with his family from suburban Duxbury, Massachusetts, to Tivoli, New York, a quiet town on the Hudson River, north of New York City. His subject matter shifted to the sprawling hills and countryside of the Hudson Valley. “I wanted to respond to the new landscape I was seeing, to catch something of the feeling I had just before dark,” says Palmer. “I took a lot of photographs, but I was happier with the paintings I created from memory.”
Leigh Palmer has been represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY for over 25 years.
