About the Item
Early 20th Century French oil on canvas landscape of a field with poppies by René Albert Raphaël Gouin. The painting is signed bottom left and there are stencil stamps to the back stretchers from an exhibition or catalogue raisonne. The painting is presented in a carved and gilded wood frame.
A wonderfully romantic and atmospheric scene of a couple in a field picking poppies. All around them is a sea of red as the iconic blooms are in full flower. Their white shirts and headscarf make them stand out from the surrounding scene. There are also haystacks in the field and in the distance layers of green, mauve and blue take our eye away into the distance and the moody sky which towers over the composition. Gouin has a mastery of colour and perspective and he shows a consummate skill in this painting. A wonderful, joyous painting that would enhance any collection or interior.
René Gouin was a French painter born in 1881 in Illiers and died in December 1949 in Chartres. Post-impressionist, this painter of landscapes and still lifes was a student of Aimé Perret, Gagliardini, Jules Lefèvre and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian and the School of Fine Arts in Paris.
He was friends with Roger de La Fresnaye and Charles Guerin. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1908 where he became a member in 1912. He won a silver medal and a gold medal.
He also exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1928, 29 and 30 and those of the National Society of Fine Arts and Independents.
He is a fine colourist who admired the volumes of Cézanne and the colours of Renoir.
