About the Item

Early 20th Century French oil on canvas landscape of a picnic on a riverbank by René Albert Raphaël Gouin. The painting is signed bottom right and there are stencil stamps to the back stretchers from an exhibition or catalogue raisonne. The painting is presented in a patinated wood frame. A wonderfully romantic and atmospheric scene of a woman and a girl on a riverbank. This painting captures a serene riverside scene enveloped in lush greenery. Dominated by vibrant shades of blue and green, the painting exudes a sense of tranquility and movement. In the foreground, a woman stands thoughtfully, accompanied by a child seated on the grass, absorbed in the peaceful surroundings. The river, reflecting the rich colours of the foliage, meanders gently through the landscape, enhancing the scene's idyllic quality. The dappled sunlight filtering through the trees adds depth and a lively contrast, skilfully blending impressionistic brushstrokes with vivid colour harmonies. The artist’s adept use of light invites viewers into this harmonious natural retreat, offering a glimpse of leisure and reflection. This work uniquely balances spontaneity with careful composition, creating a timeless portrayal of pastoral beauty. Gouin has a mastery of colour and perspective and he shows a consummate skill in this painting. A wonderful, joyous painting that would enhance any collection or interior. René Gouin was a French painter born in 1881 in Illiers and died in December 1949 in Chartres. Post-impressionist, this painter of landscapes and still lifes was a student of Aimé Perret, Gagliardini, Jules Lefèvre and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian and the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He was friends with Roger de La Fresnaye and Charles Guerin. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1908 where he became a member in 1912. He won a silver medal and a gold medal. He also exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1928, 29 and 30 and those of the National Society of Fine Arts and Independents. He is a fine colourist who admired the volumes of Cézanne and the colours of Renoir.

French Impressionist, A Clearing in the Woods, Close Circle Pierre August Renoir
By Lucien Mignon
Located in Cotignac, FR
French Impressionist landscape, oil on canvas by Lucien Mignon a close friend and pupil of Renoir. The painting is signed and dated (1935) bottom left. Presented in carved wood, patinated and gilt Montparnasse frame. A charming view of a wooded glade in a park. Mignon has used his characteristic style, very reminiscent of his master and tutor Renoir, to create a wonderful atmospheric scene. the shade of the majestic trees, the lush green of the grass, the bright pops of red colour of the flowers and the indistinct figures walking along the path. He has created a very successful perspective that draws us in to the scene. A jewel of a painting that would grace any collection or interior. Lucien Mignon (13 September 1865 – 13 March 1944) was a French painter, illustrator, lithographer and pastellist. He was one of the first pupils and disciples of Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Born on September 13, 1865 in Château-Gontier, Lucien René Mignon attended the School of Fine Arts in Angers. He went to Paris and became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was admitted in 1886. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes Français in 1889, a painting entitled Une Flânerie Sentimentale. He then exhibited with the National Society of Fine Arts (SNBA) from 1895 drawings and paintings of landscapes inspired by Angers. In 1898, at the same Salon, he exhibited three paintings, including landscapes inspired by Fontainebleau. In 1902, he divided his time between the rue du Cardinal Lemoine in Paris and Montigny-sur-Loing, which inspired the landscapes he exhibited at the SNBA, of which he was a member. In 1908, he presented La Liseuse for his last exhibition at this Salon before the First World War. He worked for the publisher Édouard Pelletan, who exhibited his work (February 1896). Around 1909, he left the 5th arrondissement of Paris and settled in Cagnes-sur-Mer, producing Provençal landscapes and motifs; he became close to Auguste Renoir, whose portrait he painted in 1913. Mignon's style is very close to that of Renoir, and his so-called "Ingresque" period. Peaches and Green Almonds, a painting exhibited in Paris at the Musée d'Orsay, dates from this period. In the 1920s, he continued to exhibit at the SNBA. He also carried out commissioned work for the Ministry of Public Works in connection with historic buildings.
