About the Item

French Impressionist painting of a marina scene by René Fontayne French, early 20th Century Frame: Height 68.5cm, width 66cm, depth 6cm Canvas: Height 50cm, width 48cm This fine oil painting depicts a closely cropped view of a harbour scene. Sailboats float on the rippled sea, their forms—whether masts or hulls—cropped by the framing of the composition. Terraced houses define the background, with the line of the quay neatly dividing the picture in two: water from land, top from bottom. The painterly style is impressionistic: the artist, René Fontayne, has employed blocks of unadulterated colour to indicate instances of light and shade. The colour palette is vibrant, the bright tones hinting at the warm summer day. The artist, René Fontayne, was an accomplished painter who found much success during the first half of the 20th Century. The painting is signed lower left ‘René Fontayne’ and is contained by a carved giltwood frame.

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting
By Lucien Adrion
Located in New York, NY
This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 19 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 27 x 32 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
