Flame Under The Willow is an acrylic painting on canvas by artist René Gonzalez. The fox has become a recurring subject in Rene Gonzalez’s work since the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, the artist had just returned to London after a technical error on his visa application had kept him away for six months, separating him from his English wife. Gonzalez began to notice parallels between his personal story and the urban foxes—creatures that roam London’s streets at night like strangers in their own home. The fox thus takes on significant importance in his work, becoming a symbol of resilience, adaptation, and liminality.
Gonzalez regards the fox as a turning point in his practice, allowing him to merge personal experience with broader symbolic storytelling: “After painting that first fox, my work transformed – all my paintings became part of a larger, interconnected narrative, anchored to my personal life story, creating a sense of meaning and continuity throughout my body of work.” Each painting became an ‘episode’ in which the artist chronicles the ongoing journey of the fox, “having adventures as he explores the mysteries of his enchanting world.”
He considers his figurative paintings “a series of small stories”: each piece carries its own narrative and originates from an emotion or story the artist wishes to convey on canvas. Gonzalez draws inspiration from a wide range of references—myths and legends from various cultures, advertising, photography, cinema, and art history—to create his quasi-theatrical compositions. He selects vibrant, intense colors for their power to evoke emotion and atmosphere, dedicating considerable time to finding harmonious chromatic combinations.
With a dual Latin American and Western cultural heritage, Gonzalez also weaves his personal experiences—profoundly shaped by geographic displacement, whether chosen or imposed—into his work through symbols and allegories. Dialogue with the viewer is essential; he often regards his paintings as a conversation with a virtual audience. While he embeds thematic clues within his work, Gonzalez always leaves their ultimate interpretation to the observer.
