About the Item

Where the Forest is Darkest is an acrylic painting on canvas by artist René Gonzalez representing two foxes crossing paths in the heart of a dark and haunting forest. Dimensions are 75 × 50 cm (29.6 x 19.7 in). This artwork is signed and sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the fox has become a recurring subject in René Gonzalez’s work. At that time, the artist had just returned to London after being forced to stay away for six months due to a technical error in his visa application—an ordeal that separated him from his English wife. During this period, he began to draw parallels between his own experience and the urban foxes, nocturnal wanderers of London’s streets, like strangers in their own home. The fox has since taken on deep significance in his work, becoming a powerful symbol of resilience, adaptation, and liminality. Rene Gonzalez sees his figurative paintings as “a series of small stories”: each work includes a narrative and has its origins in an emotion or story that the artist wishes to convey on the canvas. He draws on a multitude of references that he knows and that surround him to find the elements for his quasi-theatrical compositions: the myths and legends of different cultures, advertising, photography, cinema, and art history. He chooses vibrant, intense colours for their ability to evoke emotions or a particular atmosphere. The artist spends a great deal of time looking for harmonious chromatic combinations. With a dual Latin American and Western cultural heritage, Rene Gonzalez also incorporates, through symbols and allegories, his personal experience which has been profoundly influenced by geographical displacement, sometimes forced, sometimes chosen. Dialogue with the viewer is essential for the artist, who sometimes sees his works as a real conversation with a virtual audience. Although he inserts thematic clues into his paintings, Rene Gonzalez always leaves their final interpretation to the observer. “My work depicts dreamlike landscapes inhabited by animal figures, weaving together elements of mythology, symbolism, and the natural world. Through intricate forestry and celestial motifs, I explore themes of mystery, transformation, and the unseen forces that shape our understanding of reality.” Rene Gonzalez

Forest Meditations, Original Painting
By Candice Eisenfeld
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Candice Eisenfeld draws inspiration from the silhouetted trees of the rainforests of Northern Georgia. "One early morning as the fog was clearing, a hawk guided me through the mountains," shares Candice. "The hawk led me through ethereal, meditative places with overwhelming beauty." She took photographs of her journey and painted her experiences of the adventure. "The bottom image depicts the rough, beginning of the journey and the scene portrays the ending. The rough, orange texture denotes the bark of the trees."

About the Artist
As an American exploring issues of identity, artist Candice Eisenfeld paints through the lens of the first American art movement, the Hudson River School. Rather than depicting a specific locale, Candice’s artwork evokes a sense of place. These "inner landscapes" are invented, and often reference photographs taken during travels in southern Appalachia and the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains. Whether real or imagined, her paintings are influenced by the Dutch Masters, Tonalists, and Chinese painting. Produced on a single wooden panel, the ethereal landscapes are often joined with segments of aqueous color fields which act as commentary for the landscapes, like the chorus in a Greek play. The crisp, hard edges separating the landscapes from the color fields command a sense of order in an otherwise fluid and painterly surface. With two or three sections of the panel competing for attention, the painting creates multiple focal points. Candice's art has been displayed in embassies in Namibia and Belarus, held in the collections of Norwest Bank and Northwest...

This Changes Everything (Landscape, Mixed media, forest, sun, trees, night)
By Rachelle Krieger
Located in New York, NY
Acrylic, spraypaint, oilbar, oil on linen Faint signature at bottom center of painting in silver. See photo. During the days of painting en plein air, Krieger describes how she began to dream about painting while sleeping, and thus turned those night visions into this series of night time paintings. In these, we see the landscape transformed into a dream-like setting. These surrealist imaginings of the natural world place Krieger’s paintings within a cohort of contemporary women painters reimagining the tradition of the landscape genre, such as Shara Hughes...
