About the Item

'The Pont Neuf, Sunset' by Rinaldo Cuneo. Paris, Académie Colarossi, Oakland, New York Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art ---- Signed lower right, 'Rinaldo Cuneo' (American, 1877-1939) and painted circa 1925. Provenance: Private collection, Illinois. Previously in the collection of Frank E. Cummings (accompanied by Butterfield & Butterfield documentation). A lyrical, early twentieth-century view of the Seine and this beloved Parisian landmark with laborers and pedestrians shown walking home beneath dramatic sunset clouds. Undated but likely painted between 1911-1913, when the artist was studying in Paris at the Académie Colarossi. Rinaldo Cuneo first studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute under Gottardo Piazzoni and Arthur Matthews. He subsequently furthered his studies in London and, later, at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. Cuneo exhibited with success worldwide, including at the Panama Pacific International Exhibition (1915) and at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (1933). Commissioned to paint the murals for San Francisco’s Coit Tower in 1934, he continued to work, teach and exhibit widely until his death in 1939. Rinaldo Cuneo was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and his works are held in the permanent collections of museums nationwide, including the Oakland Museum, the De Young Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The artist is listed in all relevant art-reference works including Who Was Who in American Art. Accompanied by a first-edition copy of 'Rinaldo Cuneo: An Evolution of Style' by Monica E. Garcia-Thow (William A. Karges Fine Art, 1991).
