About the Item
Scottish Highland landscape scene with English Setter gun dogs, the day's bag, and Red Grouse, after a day shooting.
M. Fawcett was a pseudo name for Robert Cleminson a well-known Victorian animal and sporting painter. He used different names throughout his painting carrier, which was a practice that was used by a few Victorian painters.
He became very well known for his subjects of deer, dead game, and sporting dogs. Exhibited at the British Institution and at the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street 1865-68. This painting is one of Cleminson’s most important and impressive works. He often painted in a soft, diffuse style, which contributes to his work is very sought after today. Thought to have been born in Scotland; died Edinburgh, Oct 1863.
This scene is often called 'The Day's Bag', a term to describe a scene of dogs, horses or ponies, and the animals that have been collected by a Gillie or boy who would have acted as an attendant on a hunting expedition in the wild landscape of the Highlands of Scotland. Sometimes the artist would include the Gillie as well in the painting.
This piece is an exceptional example of the artist's work, both in size and also in quality and composition.
The piece has been framed in a hand made English giltwood Sporting pattern frame.
This painting would work in many different rooms in a home such as a dining room, hallway, entrance hall, family room, study, or den.
The compatible colors for this piece are, Green, gray, white, black, taupe, beige, brown, blue, gold and silver and I'm sure others.
