About the Item
An abstract Mid-Century piece with a bright color palette, with the use of green, yellow, orange, red, burnt sienna, black, pink, white, and blue, among others. In this abstract composition, we find all the figures seated and enjoying a meal under the canopies at the park on a bright summer day. This piece is depicted with gestural marks and a colorful use of paint and complex placement. A strong modernist oil painting done in 1964. Freiman, known for his figures on canvas or street scenes, is able to capture a wonderful abstract style with strong suggestive brush strokes, color blocks, and form. This painting is signed and dated by the artist lower right, and it comes unframed and stretched in the original stretcher bars from the artist's studio.

Robert Freiman, deaf from birth, was born in March 1917 in New York City. He attended an oral program near his home and later transferred to the Lexington School for the Deaf when he was six. Early in his childhood, his love for drawing, painting, and studying became apparent. As an adult, he continued his studies in New York at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, the Art Students League, and the Parsons School of Design. In Paris, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. Freiman was especially focused on painting portraits and figures in motion in various mediums, especially the mixed-media combination of watercolor, acrylic, and pen. Among his subjects were acrobats, ballet dancers, cyclists, and other athletes. He as well focused on abstracts for a time, discovering new media in his works with quick brushwork and expressive movements.
