  • Quai De La Tournelle, Paris Street Scene Oil Painting, American Deaf Modernist
    By Robert Freiman
    Located in Surfside, FL
Paris street scene oil painting in original vintage hand carved frame, showing some wear. Signed l.r. and dated 1953. Inscribed on reverse with title. 28.50 in. by 33.50 in. include frame. Unframed 19.75 in. by 24 in. Robert Freiman, deaf from birth, was born in March 1917 in New York City. He attended an oral program near his home and later transferred to the Lexington School for the Deaf when he was six. Early in his childhood, his love for drawing, painting and studying became apparent, and as an adult, he continued his studies in New York at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, the Art Students League and the Parsons School of Design. In Paris, France he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Bob Freiman was especially focused on painting portraits and figures in motion in various mediums, especially the mixed-media combination of watercolor, acrylic and pen. Among his subjects were acrobats, ballet dancers, cyclists and other athletes. He as well focused on abstracts for a time, discovering new media in his works with quick brushwork and expressive movements. In the latter part of his career, his style became abstract and surreal with images of metaphysical landscapes with architectural elements such as arches, towers, pyramids and castles floating in the air. The famed art critic Pierre Rouve wrote: “It is therefore refreshing to see them revitalized by the colourist wealth and virile handwriting of Robert Freiman, probably the best American water-colorist since John Marin. He worked in Provincetown and Nantucket and regularly exhibited there. He showed at Doll & Richards gallery of Boston alongside John Chetcuti, Lloyd Goodrich, Tod Lindenmuth, William Meyerowitz, Dwight Shepler, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, Stanley Woodward, Andrew Wyeth, and others. His work bears the influence of the mid century school of Paris in particular Jean Carzou. He was a regular exhibitor at the Sidewalk Art...

  • Modernist Family Outing with Dog (Picnic in the Park) Ben Benn Oil Painting WPA
    By Ben Benn
    Located in Surfside, FL
Genre: Modern Subject: People Medium: Acrylic Surface: Canvas Country: United States Dimensions: 20" x 24" Scene of a family leisurely gathering together in a park to picnic and enjoying their day by the artist Ben Benn. Ben Benn, Russian/American (1884-1983) Ben Benn, a Russian-born American still-life and Post Impressionist landscape painter who was part of the first generation of artists in America to try to digest the lessons of Cubism Benn Benn was a pioneer American modernist whose independent style defied stylistic classification. Despite excursions into Cubism and Abstract Expressionist style, Benn “seems always to have been a ‘subject’ painter. Considering this, it is remarkable that he remained visible at all during the 50’s and early 60’s, when prejudice against the representational amounted nearly to a proscription of it.” Benn’s prominence in the art world over 6 decades was reaffirmed at a 90th birthday show at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington , D.C. in 1974. Benn was born Benjamin Rosenberg in the town of Kamenets Podolsk in the Russian empire in 1884. This town was the regional capital of an area in what is today, SW Ukraine, and was historically known as Podolia. the Rosenberg family chose, along with thousands of others, to immigrate from Podolia to the United States in 1894 or 1899. “Between 1904 and 1908 Benn attended the National Academy of Design and he studied at the Arts Students League In New York City. He spent most of his career in New York City including memberships with the American Society of Painters and Sculptors, American Artists Congress and the Woodstock Artist Association. Academy curriculum stressed portraiture built up with broad, painterly brushstrokes, a technique that remained the foundation of Benn’s style. In his first group show, in 1913, he exhibited with Max Weber and Man Ray. By the mid teens his canvases were bolder in color and more decorative in style. In 1916, Benn participated in the important "Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters...

  • Judaica Oil Painting Altneuschul Maharal Synagogue Prague
    By Hovik Muradian
    Located in Surfside, FL
14.5 X 16.5 with frame HOVIK MURADIAN Born in 1964 in Yerevan, Armenia ,he now lives and works in Prague, Czech Republic. His pictures are in private collections in Germany, France, America and other countries. Hovik Muradian was born in 1964 in Yerevan, Armenia, within the view of the biblical Mt. Ararat, in the land of the sun, mountains, rocks, and savanna grass, in the country with a fate similar to that of every small country controlled by a more powerful country, in the country with the history of struggle for independence. Back in 1964, Armenia was a part of the Soviet Union and was called the Armenian Socialist Republic. After the tragic earthquake in 1988, Hovik went on a quest for a new life outside his homeland. He found it in the Czech Republic where he has been living since 1992. He has a nice family and a studio close to his flat in one of the Prague suburbs where he paints, and he exhibits his paintings around the world. Yet, his dark eyes keep looking through the web of nostalgia, his blood is diluted with meditation, and his romantic heart searches for angular colors of brightness. But I may be totally wrong. I am just trying to find an alibi for my headline. Hovik Muradian was raised in a family where his father, academic painter Shavarsh Muradian (1936), whose favorite style of painting was landscape, initiated Hovik’s artistic education (the School of Arts of Jakob Kojoian, and the College of Arts of Panos Terlemezian in Yerevan from 1976 to 1984). Cultural inspiration, music, theatre, literature etc. are probably the legacy of the school; we can find symbols of the mentioned arts both in his early and later paintings. However, what the painter soon left behind was the technique of paint applying. His impasto paintings quickly changed into delicately color and delimited areas. The delimitation of shapes is a typical element in Muradian’s paintings. Sometimes, the area is geometrically divided into right-angle shapes, other times the painter seems to use different arches to make them in an abstract grouping of matter. However, he never stops there. In his compositions, we can find a part of a figure, nude, musical instrument, or common item. His genre is figurative abstraction. Rationality that forces us to meditate can be found only in his later paintings. His canvases are full of technical artifacts symbolizing time, order, as well as mystery, a pursuit to learn, search, and ask questions. His paintings clearly show what kind of questions the author asks. Qualification: 1976 - 1980: Graduation from the School of Arts of Jacob Kojoian, Department of Paintings, Yerevan 1980 - 1984: Graduation from the Collage of Arts of P.Terlemezian, Department of Paintings, Yerevan Single Exhibitions to Date: 1985 The House of Armenian Journalists, Yerevan (Armenia) 1994 Russian House...

A sawah landscape, Sumatra Signed and dated 'Sonnega '54' (lower right), and annotated 'Voor Jan de Bas 1-1-1970 / R de Bas' (on the reverse) oil on canvas, 50,5x60,5 cm Provenance: - Collection Pieter de Bas (1909-1979) Mr de Bas was head of the MULO school and acting head of the HBS school in Medan. Thence by descent to the present owner. Exhibited: - Hotel de Boer, Medan 1954, where acquired by the first owner. The light I observed everywhere was of a special quality, fluorescent blue, shone from nowhere but radiated from every point, oddly with great depth and intensity. The light in an entirely different dimension came from nowhere and went nowhere shimmering with the glow of a bright blue jewel. The most important thing I discovered was of being omnipresent and able to understand everything at the same time, yes I could fathom creation completely. Auke Sonnega, born March 9, 1910 in Leeuwarden, known as the painter, primarily of young Balinese men and women. Originally raised in the reformed denomination, the parents of Auke apparently practised theosophy and their children, including Auke were taught these principles. The talent for drawing revealed itself at an early stage which in 1926 lead to a 4-year study of textile design at the Academy for Art and Craft in Amsterdam. He completed the academy in 1930 and worked in a carpet factory in Twente until 1934 and then followed in his sister Aafje’s footsteps leaving the Netherlands to go to the Dutch East Indies where in 1935 he started working as a graphic designer with an advertising bureau in Batavia. He was able to travel through Java and Bali on the motorbike that he brought with him from Europe, and was paid for his travelogue, enhanced with his own photo’s which appeared in several Dutch newspapers and magazines. In the 1930’s two Europeans, Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet...

Note: Theo Meier arrived in Bali in 1936 with the intention of going on to Tahiti where he had been before. However Bali turned out to be the paradise he had been searching for in his dreams and he had no desire any more to move elsewhere. Bali at that time was still a very traditional place where society lived according to an acient religious system and in a luscious tropical setting the modern world was ignored. Here he met Walter Spies...
