Ernest Samuel Geiger
Ernst Samuel Geiger (1876-1965) Expressionist Landscape Oil Painting Switzerland

c. 1945

About the Item

Ernst Samuel Geiger (Swiss, ∗ 1.2.1876 Turgi, † 16.12.1965 Neuenstadt) The Church of Ligerz in the Vineyards along the shore of the Lake of Bienne in Switzerland • Oil paint impasto on heavy card, ca. 20 x 28 cm (slightly irregular) • Vintage shabby chic frame, ca. 28.5 x 37 cm • Signed (twice) bottom right corner Colorful landscape with the ancient church of Ligerz depicted in the midst of the vineyards along the shore of the Lake of Bienne and with a glimpse of the lake of Môrat beyond dating the mid 1940's. Magnificent little expressionist painting by this sought after Swiss painter. The painting is per se good and pleasingly untouched condition – No cleaning/no varnishing – Nothing. All there is to say: The piece of card must have always had a damage/dent on the back and does slightly show on the front. However, the spot was simply over painted by the artist as he created this exiting little painting well over 70 years ago. The landscape comes framed in, what is its ‘original’ frame - A vintage frame which was delicately colored to match the painting either by the artist himself or a previous owner – I just gave it a gentle clean and waxing and now its subdued, shabby chic style works splendidly with the wild little painting. Ernst Samuel Geiger was the son of the wine merchant Ulrich and Sophie, née Schwarz. His sister Marie was Max Bill's mother. From 1892 to 1896 Geiger attended college in Aarau, where he was a classmate of Albert Einstein and received first drawing lessons from Max Wolfinger. He went on to study forestry at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate from the University of Zürich in 1900. In the years that followed, Geiger taught at home and abroad and in 1902 he returned to Switzerland to acquire a teacher's license. In 1904 he was a founding member of the Aarau section of the Society of Swiss Painters and Sculptors (GSMBA) and various study of art studies took him to Munich and Paris. Besides painting, Geiger was initially drawn to wood cutting and had received training from no one less, than the famous Swiss maestro Cuno Amiet. In 1906 he decided to pursue a career as an artist and in 1908 he moved to Berne where he married the philologist Maria, née Bockhoff, who died in 1921 during child birth. Between 1905 and 1941, Geiger created over 70 bookplates, using his specific own technique. Geiger became the central secretary of the 'Schweizerische Künstlergesellschaft', which was then chaired by Ferdinand Hodler. As such, he was in constant contact with a wide variety of Swiss artists and in 1911 he received a federal art grant and moved with his family from Berne to the "Kapf" situated above the small village of Twann/ Douanne on the shore of the lake of Bienne. Here he created all those lake scapes that made him famous throughout Switzerland. In 1918 the family then moved to close by lake shore village Ligerz/ Gléresse and from 1920 on up to 1925 Geiger would visit and work above Locarno in the Monti della Trinità and also in Como, as well as in the closer by Bernese alps. In 1926 he then bought a studio house near Porto Ronco, where he would spend time and also share with his many artistic acquaintances. In 1930 Geiger seemed to settle down, remarried in 1937 and was now working as a drawing teacher at the public schools in Twann and the near by city of Biel/Bienne. He remained an active, accomplished and celebrated artist for many years to come. Thank you for your interest and please note, that I offer free worldwide shipping on all my items.

Alphons (Alfons) Müller (Swiss, * 24.8.1898 Mitlödi, † 8.6.1955 Biel) ' Im Häfeli ' The small harbor at the Lake of Biel / Bienne in Switzerland • Oil on artist board, ca. 47 x 38 cm • Frame, ca. 54 x 45 cm • Signed bottom right Alphons Müller lived and worked in the watch industries in Biel/Bienne in Switzerland up to about 1933. He then decided to become a full-time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955. Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pup and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand, he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching images - especially during the war. In the late thirties he meets his two loyal patrons, the baker Werner Gass and the pharmacist...
