Ralph Reuben / Ruben Stubbs
Ralph R. Stubbs - Low tide at Sunset - English 19th Century Marine Oil Painting

c. 1865

About the Item

Ralph Reuben/Ruben Stubbs (English, 1824-1879) Low Tide at Sunset • 19thC Oil on artist board (card) ca. 21 x 36.5 cm • Signed bottom right and verso Biografie: Stubbs Ralph Reuben/Ruben was born in 1826 in Bridlington on Englands East coast. His father was Ralph I. Stubbs (1773 -1845), a struggling artist from Hull. Besides basic art lessons from his father, Ralph Reuben didn’t visit schools, nor did he receive any formal training in art. The young artist however knew he was talented and spend time in nature. Fascinated by the wild scenery of the Yorkshire coast. he would wander along the shores lines, sketching the rugged, rocky outcrops and vessels he would discover on his outings. Over time he perfected his skills, especially his talent to be able to depict correctly what he saw and of course his masterly blending of the colours he experienced. Throughout his life he worked hard, knowing full well, that his talent alone would not be enough to be successful. Eventually Ralph Reuben became a household name in Yorkshire and he was not just known as an accomplished local artist, but also appreciated as a jovial fellow, full of anecdotes, mischief and fun – always the soul of any party. Consequently, his paintings found their way into many Yorkshire homes, then into various art collections and finally were sold throughout England and Europe. Today his paintings are still sought after by collectors in the whole world. Ralph Reuben/Ruben Stubbs died on March 30, 1879, in Levisham, England. Here we have a beautiful ‘plain air’ oil sketch, depicting fishing vessels at low tide. The ease the artist displays, to depict this atmospheric scene is breathtaking – you can virtually imagine the artist’s brush dancing over the board arranging the paints into this spontaneous, impressionistic marine painting, as the sun sets over the north sea. This little painting is in its ‘as found’ condition – A bit grubby, scratched and chaffed; but oozing unique charm. On the top is a small hole, through which a string was threaded that suspended the little painting, as it hung in a cottage outside of Norwich, where I bought it out of the estate of the deceased previous owner two decades ago. (I have added a photo of the still attached string) The painting is signed twice – bottom right and across the back. Also, there is a monogram ‘SS’ on the back which is probably the mark of a previous owner. I suggest the next owner takes the painting to their favorite framer, finds the perfect stile of frame which links this little 19thC gem to the stile of their home and it will delight generations to come. He then decided to become a full-time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955. Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pup and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand, he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching images - especially during the war. In the late thirties he meets his two loyal patrons, the baker Werner Gass and the pharmacist...
