Franz Müller-Gossen was born in 1871 in Mönchengladbach, Germany and studied from 1886 to 1889 at Kunstschule in Düsseldorf. He then travelled throughout Europe and settled in 1890 in St. Ives, where he studied under Stanhope Forbes and Julius Olsen. He went on to become a very respected marine painter, exhibiting his work all over Europe, America and Japan. In 1902 the Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany visited his studio in Munich and purchased nine paintings. Franz Müller–Gossen loved St. Yves – he considered the region to be ‘essential for his art and happiness’ and his painting The Wharf of St. Yves is held in the collection of the Royal Cornwall Museum. He died on the 16th of March in 1946 in Lausanne, Switzerland. This painting on offer is a great example of Franz Müller–Gossen's life long declaration of love to Cornwall's light and coast, superbly catching that tranquil atmosphere of this small cove. He then decided to become a full-time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955. Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pup and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand, he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching images - especially during the war. In the late thirties he meets his two loyal patrons, the baker Werner Gass and the pharmacist...
