Swiss painter Otto Tschumi, considered one of the most important Swiss surrealists, was born on the 4th of August 1904 in Bittwil, Seeberg, Switzerland and died on the 18th February 1985 in Bern. Tschumi grew up in modest circumstances in Bern and attended basic school there. He then ended his apprenticeship as a sign painter and lithographer early and being talented, he was able to earn a living as a free lance graphic artist. Basically self-taught, he developed his artistic style in the 1920s. In 1933 he married the love of his life the dancer Beatrice Gutekunst. From 1936 to 1940 they lived in Paris and during that period, having experienced the work of Max Ernst, Jean Arp and other surrealists, Otto developed his own specific surrealistic stile. In 1946 he was able to exhibit for the first time in the Kunsthalle Bern. In the 1950’s he went on to become internationally recognized and in 1960 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale. After his death in 1987 he was honored in retrospective Exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts Bern, Switzerland and the Kunsthalle Nürnberg, Germany. Tschumi’s work from during the war years is rather rare, art historically important and sought after. The small landscape on offer was created in that period, just before the artist got his big break, which would account for the ‘budget’ framing job, as money was tight in those years. Ironically the shabby-chic framlet meets todays taste perfectly. I am ASGrond - Art & Antiques. Passionate collector, purveyor and artist.
