About the Item
'Dusk on Schoelcher Lagoon Martinique', oil on canvas, by Robert Humblot (1959). The third in a series of artworks completed in 1959 when the artist visited the French Antilles. He painted several colourful pieces depicting life on the islands which were later used in the Maison Nicolas annual fine wine catalogue (see 'Provenance' below). In this particular painting, palm trees tower over a man who has just moved his small boat at the end of the day from the lagoon to the sandy terrain. Immediately behind him is a variety of lush tropical greenery and a darkened blue sky over mountainous elevations surrounding a nearby port town.
This artwork is in good overall condition and has been newly framed with a French-style linen slip. The artist signed the work in the lower right: 'Humblot'. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video may be provided.
Provenance: From the Nicolas Family collection. Louis Nicolas founded Maison Nicolas in 1822 and has the distinction of being the first wine retailer in France. As a celebration of 100 years in business, Maison Nicolas created an advertising campaign using a logo for their company. A frail deliveryman with a moustache and wide eyes loaded with bottles in each hand was the Maison Nicolas logo. Between 1922 and 1975, some of the most famous French illustrators competed to reinvent this character. Maison Nicolas' owners commissioned artists to illustrate the annual catalogues providing a synergy between wine and art. Because of the fine art used in the content of their annual catalogues, they are highly collected and valuable. In 1960 Robert Humblot painted several works "Under the sign of the French West Indies" for the annual luxury catalog or list of the great wines of the Nicolas house. This original work was printed on page 15 of the 1960 catalogue.

His painting has the peculiarity of being tinged with humour. Through his nudes, landscapes, still lifes and portraits, Humblot wanted to convey his ideas of what the world should be. 'Characters in a Surrealist Landscape', oil on canvas, by Lucien Coutaud (1931). A couple entwine with the male character seemingly in grief, the female not returning with a comforting embrace. In the distant landscape a sole character meanders. This painting seems to be a creation of the artist's dreams, perhaps reflecting events in his personal life. It seems there is a relationship problem. In the world of Surrealists, there is a focus on the unconscious mind through Freudian methods of free association, trance-like states or dreams. Some Surrealists practiced psychic 'automatism' which was automatic writing or drawing, turning off the conscious mind and producing streams of words or images directly from the unconscious. In unlocking the unconscious in this way, Surrealism was individually expressed (Ref. 'The Short Story of Art...

Cabins in the Camargue
By Yves Brayer
Located in London, GB
'Cabins in the Camargue' by Yves Brayer (circa 1950s). The Camargue is a vast, swampy delta near Arles, very exotic, with tall marsh grasses where pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses roam freely. This image depicts one of the gardians in a small gathering of cabanes, hat hanging cowboy-style around the back of the neck, as he approaches his horse grazing outside its modest stable. Although there are many horses that still run free in the Camargue, there are cowboys like this one — called gardians — who ride the white horses on the beaches...

Description:
This vibrant abstract oil painting is a striking study of geometric pattern and color, featuring a richly textured grid in warm shades of orange, red, and yellow. The painting is centered around a rectangular motif composed of carefully aligned squares and rectangles in earthy hues, bordered by lines of teal, green, and soft pastels that create a stunning contrast against the surrounding warm tones. The artist has skillfully used varying shades to create depth and rhythm within the grid, giving each square a...
