Robert Richter
"Bodega Tree, " Original Cropped Green Landscape Oil signed by Robert Richter

2011

About the Item

"Bodega Tree" is an original oil painting by Wisconsin artist Robert Richter, signed on the verso. The frame was hand-carved by the artist, making it an integral piece of the work of art. The work is dominated by the top of a green tree in the lower left corner. Beyond it, there are a few brown hills and darker green shrubs, but the clear blue sky takes up most of the rest of the image. Art size: 13 1/2" x 9" Frame size: 18 1/2" x 14" Artist statement: "I was born in Milwaukee over half-a-century ago in the year of the horse. I started painting in earnest when I was eight years old. My parents saw that it might be nice for me to take some art lessons. I spent Saturdays in those days drawing Superman and Batman (Batwoman too, Ha!) from comic books. My formative brain was stamped with the creedo that one cannot make a decent painting without making a decent drawing. To this day it is a self-imposed limitation (?) that opens my world. Later I would graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and then off to New York City with a Fine Art degree. I painted store front windows, speak easy murals for gangsters, lithographs from aluminum plates for actors, wood paintings for funk musicians, stage sets for theatre, T-shirts, costumes, curtains, wall hangings, furniture, floors- I painted everything, literally. Years later in a distant city, I received a Masters degree in Contemplative Buddhist Studies. I draw and paint from memory. When I am satisfied with a drawing, I incise it on wood panel. I color it in not too unlike a coloring book, staying pretty much within the lines. It keeps me from getting too carried away. It is a forgiving technique. I do not use photographs. I try to paint the snapshot in my head and heart. Another little thing I like to do is incorporate the sensations of many colors in a single application. A black top road for instance is noted for its peach, lavender, smoky gray yellow and dry blue- to create the sensation of all these colors in a single application. Now that would be some crayola crayon! Another painter once remarked to me, "Why bother". And here is why. I want my paintings to be stunning from across the room, to beckon, as all good paintings should. And then up close, what a surprise! So simply done! Even a cave man can do it! I am pleased and honored to be currently represented by David Barnett." 2009

  • Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975
    Located in Norwich, GB
A perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...

Mixed media assemblage sculpture/painting. Hand signed and dated recto and verso. Provenance: Galerie Alphonse Chave, bears their label verso Michel, Fernand (1913-1999) Born in 1913 in Neuviller-lès-Badonviller in the Vosges, Fernand Michel began working at the age of twelve in a Landes pottery factory. When his mother died, he went to live in Alsace with an aunt and became an art bookbinder. A lover of poetry, he bonded with Jean Vodaine, Jean Dubuffet and Alphonse Chave (Alphonse Chave was an art lover, dealer and collector. On November 15, 1947 in Vence, under the name Les Mages, he opened a contemporary art gallery which would also become a high place of art brut and unique art . The gallery took its final name - Galerie Alphonse Chave - in 1960. He exhibited Dado, Philippe Dereux, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Henri michaux, Louis Pons, Man Ray, Dorothea Tanning, Zao Wou-ki as well as other creators.) Around 1962, he began carving zinc after finding a plaque in a landfill. From this period, he made numerous assemblies, most often of large dimensions, which he called "zinc works" where buxom bathers, Venus callipyges, nuns and holy nitouches rub shoulders. The corroded and battered material over the years, used as is, gives his works a certain harshness, however softened by more ornamental pieces. Fernand Michel lived in Montpellier. He died in 1999. His work is present in the collection of La Fabuloserie in Dicy. Publications Revue "Création Franche" N ° 16, November 1998 Catalog "Donation Claude Massé", March 1999 Catalog "Collection Création Franche - 1989-2010", September 2010 Revue "Création Franche" N ° 38, June 2013 Franche Creation, Special Issue N ° 2, April 2015 His son Patrick Michel's collection is housed in Montpellier in the Musee d’arts brut, singulier and autres. "I used to accompany my father to his exhibitions since he was exhibited every year at the Galerie Chave in Vence. I still remember that Alphonse Chave once offered me a little toy (a car!) from his shop. I therefore met the artists Philippe Dereux, Armand Avril, François Ozenda, Pascal Verbena, Louis Pons, Jean Vodaine, Henri Comby, Fred Deux and Eugène Gabritschevsky- I took the decision to create the museum in order to save (and protect) my father’s work- my father was often classified under the ‘Art Brut’ label but in fact he belonged to the ‘Singular Art’ label... The term Art Brut exists since Jean Dubuffet gave it to us in 1945, covering self-taught and marginalised artists..The terms Outsider Art and Art Brut are fine with me- I place Nek Chand...
