Artist Statement 'Embryo' Series
These paintings are a visual embodiment of the sense of inner chemistry, of a life sparking and cells dividing, that was so palpable in the days after learning I would become a mother. It was a strange state, to have no real physical sense of the life growing inside me aside from some subtle changes, but a keen energetic and imaginative one that was in touch less with the biology and more with the magic—a miniature cosmos swirling within the membranes of tiny cells, gathered together in a fiercely replicating and slowly individuating group that would one day become a person. It was my first sense of becoming a temporary bridge between two worlds, that amazing task of mothers who usher in a tiny a soul from beyond the veil. - Robin Cole
