Brooke Lanier
Mountains: brick red, rust abstract landscape/mountain painting w/ gray, blue

2017

About the Item

This painting is framed in a low profile, natural maple wood contemporary style frame. The Japanese and Chinese traditions that inform Brooke Lanier’s "Imaginary" (theoretical) series are predicated on the concept of finding balance in the passive and active to produce a proper landscape. Japanese and Chinese landscapes use the depiction of mountains to connote the passive and water to represent the active. The depicted mountains are ethereal and not capable of being climbed -- they exist solely in theory and not in nature. Yet Lanier has rendered them with such exquisite brushwork that the viewer is drawn to contemplate a journey. Brooke Lanier is a Philadelphia-based artist most known for her paintings of water and those incorporating brick dust as pigment. She received her Masters of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Tyler School of Art, where she spent her first year of graduate school studying in Rome, Italy. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has shown her work in Rome, Prague, and across the United States, most notably in The Smithsonian Institute and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of Aramark Global Headquarters (Philadelphia, PA); Emory Decatur Hospital Women’s Center (Decatur, GA): Honeywell Corporate Offices (New York, NY): Volver Restaurant, Garces Corporation (Philadelphia, PA); Panorama Wine Bar (Philadelphia, PA); Lehigh Valley Hospital (Bethlehem, PA); and Kellogg Middle School (Rochester, MN). Lanier teaches watercolor painting at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She also teaches private lessons specializing in drawing and painting, focusing on developing a set of technical skills that will enable her students to visually express themselves.

Galaxy: contemporary canvas painting w/ imagery of stars, sun, universe & space
By Joseph McAleer
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
"Galaxy" is an acrylic on canvas painting with textured brushwork depicting stars and space in the universe. It is signed on the back. Edges are neatly finished and painted black, so there is no need for additional framing. Every purchase comes with a free, hardcover copy of the beautiful illustrated new book, "Joseph McAleer: Sixty Years." "Joe McAleer's paintings engage us as participants in a complex perceptual game. Comprised of contrasting patterns of color, texture, and form, which fill the canvas from edge to edge, his restless abstractions elude a fleeting encounter. Rather, they absorb our attention with rhythmic structures and visual anomalies designed to stimulate and perplex our senses. McAleer's kaleidoscopic abstractions have their basis in the humble Modernist's grid,......" - Joe Houston, Author "Optic Nerve, Perceptual Art of the 1960s"; Curator, Hallmark Art Collection. McAleer is an artist and lifelong educator based in NJ. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rowan University, and has exhibited his work up and down the east coast, including major solo exhibitions at Bridgette Mayer Gallery and Locks Gallery...
