About

Beautiful winter landscape by listed California artist Rowena Elizabeth Lung Alcorn (American, 1905-1996). Signed "Alcorn" lower left. Dated "March 1952" in pencil on verso. Rowena Alcorn `Victorian Bohemian' Artist, Before turning 20, Rowena Lung Alcorn left her native Tacoma for Santa Barbara, Calif., to live with a sister and study art. The beauty of the ocean and hills, and the exposure to other young painters had a lasting effect. Displayed in a white washed rustic wood frame. Image, 22"H x 30"L. Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, Rowena Alcorn was a long-time art teacher in the state of Washington and focused her art work early in her career on formal portraiture and landscapes including many views of California's Mohave Desert. Later she turned to Indian subjects, doing illustrations for Henry Spaulding, missionary in the Northwest. Between 1935 and 1958, she produced more than thirty life-size portraits of the Nez Perce and had numerous exhibitions of this work in museums including the National Museum in Washington D.C. and the Washington State Historical Society in Tacoma. She has written several books in collaboration with her husband on the history of the Northwest and the Nez Perce. In 1977 she compiled a book of her paintings, The Last Trail to Bear Paw: Flight of the Nez Perce in 1877. She began her art training at Santa Barbara School of Arts from 1921 to 1924 and later studied at California State Teachers College at Santa Barbara, the Armstrong School of Art, and the College of Puget Sound. From 1928 to 1935, she was Director of the Armstrong School of Art and taught at the College of Puget Sound. From 1938 to 1935, she headed the art department at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen, Washington and later taught adult division in the Tacoma Public Schools (1950-1958), Clover Park Schools (1963-1967) and Fort Steilacoom Community College (1967-1974).
