About the Item

Monumental French 18th Century oil on canvas 'Verdure' pastoral scene in the manner of the tapestries of Royal Aubusson and the style of Isaac Moillon. Provenance: Southern French Chateau, part of a decorative scheme in a dining room since its creation, thence by descent. Many 'Verdure' (foliage) tapestries were woven throughout the 17th and 18th Centuries, featuring wooded landscapes, reflecting the interest in botanical themes during this period. The Renaissance also influenced the ‘Aristolochia' (or ‘large leaves') style, depicting birds and animals amidst prolific foliage. These items were fantastically expensive and only available to Royal and Princely houses. Members of the lower aristocracy wanted to emulate these stylish items and this is probably the reason for the creation of this painting. An imposing and extremely decorative large scale oil painting of an idyllic pastoral scene. A group of herons wait at a river bank next to them a young fisherman in period costume. In the distance a chateau and its surrounding buildings, some with colonnades and arches. All this set in a landscape of 'verdure', acacia trees, aristolochia, acanthus and bullrushes. The whole scene is surrounded by a painted 'faux' frame of Baroque and Rococo elements. The Aubusson workshops were given a royal charter in 1665, but came into their own in the later 18th century, with designs by François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste Oudry and Jean-Baptiste Huet, many of pastoral rococo subjects. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source, or scale drawings from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries of the same time, figures were set against a conventional background of verdure, stylized foliage and vignettes of plants on which birds perch and from which issue glimpses of towers and towns. This painting is made up of five panels which have been stitched together. These panels were themselves part of an earlier decorative scheme and have older Rococo decoration to the back. There are various areas of repairs and folding and some staining to the surface. The painting is very much in original 'country house' condition. It would make an imposing and magnificent addition to any decorative scheme and if restored would be an incredible addition to any collection or decorative scheme. The canvas will be taken from the stretcher and rolled for transport and will need to be re stretched on a new chassis upon delivery. The frame will be taken apart and can be included in the shipment if required but will need to be reassembled.
