Painting, Architectural study. Colonial style house with green shutters. Signed lower left "R. Limbach 1946". 22 1/2" high, 26" wide, sight 18 1/2" high, 22" wide. Artist information taped verso. Original frame has wear. Russell Theodore Limbach: American artist, painter and printmaker (1904 - 1971) Born in Massillon, Ohio, Russell T. Limbach was a painter and printmaker. He attended the Cleveland School of Art, He left for Europe in 1928 and studied for nearly a year under a fourth-generation lithographer in Paris, France. He also visited Berlin, Germany and Vienna, Austria. Returning to Cleveland in the depths of the depression, he traveled to New York City, where he found work as the Art Editor of The New Masses. He was known for his political cartoons and satirical illustrations. In 1941, Russell Limbach moved to Middletown, CT and joined the faculty at Wesleyan University. subsequently was asked to organize the Graphics Division of the WPA Arts Project in New York. He was the recipient of numerous awards. His works are held in the collections numerous libraries and museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles Museum of Art. He died in Sherman, Connecticut. He was included in the show, American Prints at the Museum of Modern Art in NY (MoMA) along with John Taylor Arms, Will Barnet, Leonard Baskin, George Bellows, Thomas Hart Benton, Paul Cadmus, Ralston Crawford, John Steuart Curry, John Sloan, Ben Shahn, Antonio Frasconi, Reginald Marsh, Misch Kohn and Walt Kuhn. His work is in the collections of Brooklyn Museum, the New York Public Library, the San Francisco Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He was professor of painting at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
