The ruins of Dunure Castle lie in a quiet location overlooking Ayr Bay in the Firth of Clyde, on the west coast of Scotland. The original structure was built before the 13th century, but the remains of the castle are of a later period. The castle was the ancient seat of the Kennedys of Carrick, who were granted the lands in 1357. In 1509, David Kennedy was created 1st Earl of Cassillis. The 4th Earl of Cassillis, Gilbert Kennedy, entertained Mary, Queen of Scots, from 4th to 7th August 1563 during her third progress, which took her to the west of the country.
David Young Cameron was one of Scotland’s most prolific and influential artists. He was born in Glasgow, the son of a minister, and in the early 1880s he went to study at Glasgow School of Art. By 1885 he had gained a place at Edinburgh School of Art, where he was encouraged to take up etching because of the strength of his pen drawings. During his career he produced over five hundred etching plates, with subjects ranging from atmospheric interiors to dramatic landscapes, as well as detailed studies of buildings and figures.
He excluded all non-essential detail and at no point hints there may be a supplementary ‘story’ to the scene. More He was fascinated by the changing qualities of light, and many of his watercolours, oils and etchings explore the effects of sunrise or sunset over the landscape.

Sir David Young Cameron, R.A.
Scottish painter, etcher, and draughtsman, born in Glasgow, the son of a clergyman. He abandoned brief unhappy careers in commerce and law to study at *Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Most of his work consisted of landscapes (especially scenes of mountains) and architectural views, and he is best known for his etchings of buildings, including Gothic churches on the Continent: ”rich and sombre works" with which he established a reputation as one of the outstanding printmakers of the day.

The work has been carried out with an innovative technique, where the fluidized oil is transformed into an undulating wavy surface which is later outlined by the airbrush, the palette knife and the brush. A totally personal bet of the author, who has done an exercise in free painting, with an explosion of contrasts between the real world and abstraction.
(The artist frames almost all his paintings with a wooden strip between 0,5 and 1 cm. thick, which can be removed at will of the client).
