Stephen Kinder
East Head, Windy Day

About the Item

Stephen Kinder East Head windy day Original Landscape Painting Oil Paint on Board This painting was completed on location in the late summer of 2020. It was a breezy day on West Wittering and there was quite a lot of activity on East Head. I decided to paint the scene as the tide came in and a group of young people were having fun jumping into the water and enjoying the location. I painted quickly as the clouds passed quicky across the sky and people walked on by. I worked quickly and tried to record the changing scene in front of me while mixing colours and working with a range of brushes to capture the changing light and tide. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Stephen James Kinder was born in West London, 1970. I have always found great comfort in the landscape, and am constantly drawn to reflect this connection in the form of paintings both as small pieces on location and large studio pieces. I am intrigued by the ever-changing weather and seasons, which so dramatically change a locality. My work intends to be a reaction to the essence of a place. Some of my work is instinctive, drawing on location whilst other work derives from a memory or in response to a place visited. I find the way that light falls across the landscape and creates a particular mood an inspiration for intensely focussed compositional studies drawn in situ, capturing that particular moment in time. Some of these places and landscapes I re-visit time and again and it is through my exploration and reflections that I have developed a deeper understanding of certain locations. I have been Head of Creative Arts at Prior’s Field School in Godalming for the past 15 years and I regularly have both solo and group exhibitions. I sell my work both nationally and internationally and also work to private commissions.

"My life as a painter began in the late 1950s when abstraction was “The only game in town”. I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape. Now I use my camera as a sketchbook and search for images that seem to offer odd structure and “mystery”. I shoot multiple points of view, cull, crop, and mostly discard. The surviving photographs become the catalyst for the paintings and the process is always a mediation between memory and the small image pinned to my easel...
