About the Item
Signed and titled pointillist oil on board coastal seascape circa 1900 by Belgian neo-impressionist painter Theo van Rysselberghe. The work depicts a view of the Opal Coast, a coastal region in northern France on the English Channel. Painted on a warm summer's day in vibrant shades.
The expert on the painter - Olivier Bertrand - notes the following:
"Côte d’Opale is an exquisite little picture painted around 1900 by the artist, who was probably on holiday at the home of his friends Laure and Georges Flé, with whom he had a room and from where he travelled up and down the coast, working tirelessly to produce some very fine portraits and landscapes of the coast or town (Le port de Boulogne or Champs de courses à Boulogne, for example), with or without movement (think of the well-known painting La promenade, showing women walking on the beach). Côte d’Opale was rediscovered in a collection in Brussels while I was preparing the artist’s retrospective at Bozar Brussels and Gemeentemuseum The Hague (2006)."
The work had been kept out of sight for a century, having probably been sold by the artist in 1904, according to the date on a letter stuck to the back and its exhibition at Bozar."

Théodore van Rysselberghe was born into a family whose members included several architects. He studied under Canneel at the academy in Ghent, and then under Portaels in Brussels. Van Rysselbeghe was extremely well-off and could afford to travel extensively, painting and exhibiting as he went. He lived for several years in Paris, spending his summers by the Channel, in accordance with the Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist custom. He participated in the establishment of the Franco-Belgian artistic exchange group Les XX ( The 20) and in its various exhibitions. He was also a founder member of the Libre Esthétique movement. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris on several occasions. At that juncture, his painting was on the conventional side, fleshy and sombre, betraying some orientalist elements inherited perhaps from Portaels.
Van Rysselberghe visited Spain and Morocco on several occasions from 1884, painting his Arab Storyteller and Fantasia. His colours gradually lightened and he began to emerge as a portrait artist. He was on intimate terms with Émile Verhaeren, and it was the latter who invited him to Paris, where van Rysselberghe was greatly impressed by Seurat's La Grande Jatte. He was not entirely convinced, however, by the scientific approach the Divisionists derived from the theory of colour expounded by Chevreul and espoused to a greater or lesser degree by Signac, Cross and Pissarro.
From 1887, van Rysselberghe began painting in the Neo-Impressionist manner, becoming virtually the only artist to apply this approach to portraiture. Paintings such as Madame Oc. Ghysbrechts, Octave Maus (1885) and Madame Maus (1890) date from around this time. Van Rysselberghe also painted a number of landscapes, among them Promenade and Tartan Vessels at Sète. Around 1895, he joined Henry van de Velde in a bid to resuscitate the decorative arts. He designed posters, furniture, typographical elements and jewellery in the 'new style' and painted a large number of decorative panels specifically commissioned by architects.
In 1898, he left Brussels and settled in Paris, where he moved in Symbolist literary circles. His wife - 'Madame Théo' or 'The Little Lady' - played an important role in the life of André Gide. In 1903, van Rysselberghe painted his celebrated Reading, where a large number of writers are depicted in a group surrounding Verhaeren, including Gide, Maeterlinck and Fénéon. He continued to paint essentially in the Neo-Impressionist manner, using visual effects achieved by juxtaposed patches of colour, with a predominance of violets, mauves and blues. While residing at St-Clair in Provence, however, he felt a need for a greater repertoire in terms of technique and colour. He duly abandoned the strict tenets of Neo-Impressionism and began painting in the Fauvist manner, using more intense colours in his seascapes and bathing scenes, where the female bathers' bodies are fleshed out by the strong colours of sea and sun.

From the beginning of his career, it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagnet to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France.
In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948).
D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier, Victor Boucher, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Marque, André Marty and Albert Roussel. He also painted mural decorations, including a wall for the Palais de la Découverte (1937), the ceiling of the Victor Hugo Room in the Palais du Luxembourg (1939), a decorative panel for the Palais de Justice, Toulouse (1941) and interior decorations for private houses. His landscapes are Impressionist in inspiration, and work for a certain sobriety, an intimacy, both in their composition - one, two or three sketched figures and large open spaces - and in the choice of colours and treatment with the special hazy brushstroke that marks his style.
D'Espagnet took part in a number of annual Parisian exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne (from 1903 to 1949, except in special circumstances), the Salon de la Libre Ésthétique, Brussels (1899, 1901), the Berlin Secessionists (1940). He also exhibited at the first Salon de la Société de la Gravure sur Bois.
