About the Item

Large Impressionist landscape painting, oil on canvas, by noted French artist Théophile Lemonnier. The painting is signed bottom left and is presented in a period gold patinated wood frame. A charming view of a meandering river passing through countryside, a farm in the distance surrounded by tall majestic trees. In the river and on its bank we can imagine the bullrushes moving and rustling in the gentle breeze. Lemonnier has captured the languid nature of the scene, the reflections in the water, the shades of green in the landscape all under the expanse of the sky. His impasto technique gives depth and texture to the painting and his use of perspective draws us in to the composition. Théophile Lemonnier was born in Rennes, France on 27 February 19011 and died on May 28, 1981. He was a noted French painter, draughtsman and engraver. Born into a wealthy family, Théophile Lemonnier's father was a pharmacist and poet. Théophile was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Rennes in the studio of Pierre Galle, who became a friend, and he won the Minister's Prize in 1922. In 1923, he entered the studio of Lucien Simon (1861-1945) at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he remained until 1925. That same year, he became a member of the Société Nationale des beaux-arts. He was a professor of anatomy at the School of Fine Arts in Rennes during the Second World War and became its director in 1948. During his career, Théophile Lemonnier produced a large number of woodcuts. They depict Breton types and costumes (bell-ringers, embroiderers, peasants), but also views of the old quarters of Rennes. Lemonnier completed several large mural wall paintings and stage sets during his career: Rennes: stage curtain of the city theater in 1934. As well as the set for the cinema: The Frenchman in Rennes. Saint-Brieuc: La Poésie, Les Lettres, La Philosophie, L'Histoire, La Géographie, Les Sciences, La Chimie, La Physique et Les Arts, 1938, murals, Saint-Brieuc, cupola of the rotunda of the Lycée Ernest-Renan. Fougères, former chapel of the Jean-Guéhénno high school, former hospice of La Chesnardière : Saint-Louis, fresco in a side niche, about 7 metres high, 47 m2 ; The Virgin, fresco in a second side niche, about 7 meters high, 47 m2 ; Stations of the Cross of 14 stations, fresco. The whole was completed on August 25, 1939. He exhibited widely during his career: 1925: Muller Gallery, Rennes, La Première Bolée. 1926: 32nd exhibition of the Artistic Association of Brittany in Rennes: A village barber in Upper Brittany. 1929: Association artistique de Bretagne à Rennes, L'étang le matin; Valley of Rochefort-en-Terre. 1931: fiftieth anniversary of the School of Fine Arts in Rennes, The Village Barber; Farmyard in the land of salt. 1933: Artistic Association of Brittany in Rennes. 1934: Artistic Association of Brittany in Rennes: Winter in Sologne. 1935 :Rennes, hall of Ouest-Éclair: Church of the Tiercent; Morning on the river; Salt marshes. Association artistique de Bretagne à Rennes: Farmyard in Brittany. 1936: Artistic Association of Brittany in Rennes, La Vallée du Couesnon in Vieux-Vy. 1937: Paris, Brittany pavilion at the 1937 Universal Exhibition, decorations of the activity hall. Nine other painters appear alongside him, including Louis Garin and Jean Bouchaud His works are held in various national collections and he taught various artists who themselves went on to have illustrious and successful careers.
