About the Item
On offer is a jewel of an artwork, a watercolor done with the delicacy of exquisite enamel work. The scene is set on a colonnaded terrace with a commanding view of a mountain lake or coastal inlet framed on either side by tall cliffs. The pleasure with which most of us contemplate repose on a tropical beach, would be more than matched by someone from Manchester or Birmingham viewing this painting in the mid 19th-century, back when the Grand Tour was the dream.
Thomas Creswick (1811-1869) may well have inspired or even created this work. He was a prominent British landscape painter and illustrator noted for his interest in painting settings along rivers and streams in his native land. He worked outdoors, directly from nature, rather like the later Impressionists, en plein air, the resulting effect being an engaging spontaneity. While Creswick’s focus was painting in oils, he was known to have worked in watercolors, and further he didn’t always sign his work. Only an expert can verify one way or the other.
The verso of this work indicates the board came from the longtime British art material suppliers, Windsor & Newton. The firm was located at the label's address from 1832 to 1938, when they moved to northwest London. Aside from supporting a possibility of the artwork’s creation during Creswick’s career in the 19th century, it was also fortunate timing for the firm; these original premises were utterly destroyed in the London Blitz shortly afterward.
