About the Item
The scene depicted is taken from the Chapter 20 of the apocriphal gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, telling about an event happened during the rest on the flight to Egypt. The Virgin Mary, tired, asked Joseph to get her some dates from a palm where she was leaning on but, unfortunatly, it was too high and he couldn't make it. So intervened Jesus that ordered the palm to bend.
In our painting the very rare subject is represented with a variant: the angels were the means between the branches of the palm and the Holy Family, creating an ideal path between the spiritual orders and the Earth experience.
From the artistic point of view it shows resemblances with the style of the Centre of Italy but with clear influences of the roman enrvironment of the early 19th century. Particularly evident the "Perugineschi" (ispired-by-Perugino) affinities, mostly in the delicacy of the phisiognomies and in the light recalling Renaissance atmospheres, making us suggest Tommaso Minardi as the author.
Minardi, born in Faenza, studied in Rome and was the director of the Perugia Academy for a long time. The component freshness and the neoclassical structures of the shapes, clearly highlighting the attention dedicated to the sketching as taught in the Academies, perfectly match the stylistic characteristics of this artist that in the 1843 signed the "Purismo Manifest"
