Turner Messick
1940s Western Mountain Landscape Oil Painting – Snowy Peaks, American West

circa 1940

About the Item

This original oil painting by Turner B. Messick (1878–1952) captures a serene Western mountain landscape, likely set in California or Colorado, painted during the 1940s. The scene features majestic snow-capped peaks beneath a cloud-streaked blue sky, with a winding creek and sagebrush in the foreground. Messick’s use of earth tones—rich browns, soft greens, deep purples, and crisp whites—creates a tranquil yet vivid composition that reflects the grandeur of the American West. The painting is presented in a beautifully carved custom gold frame, enhancing its vintage appeal. Framed dimensions: 14 ½" H x 16 ¾" W Image size: 8 ½" H x 11 ½" W About the Artist: Turner B. Messick was an American painter and teacher born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1878. A classically trained artist, he studied at prestigious institutions including the National Academy of Design, Columbia University, and the Peabody Institute, and trained under noted artists Robert Henri and George Bellows. Messick spent much of his career teaching at the Denver Art School and Santa Fe Art School and later served as the State Supervisor of the WPA Art Program in Denver during the 1940s. His landscapes often reflect the dramatic beauty of the Colorado Rockies and the American Southwest, where he lived and worked for decades. In the early 1950s, Messick and his wife Clara relocated to Los Angeles, where he continued to paint until his death in 1952. His work represents a blend of academic training and regional influence, capturing the evolving American landscape in a traditional yet expressive style.
