About the Item
A vibrant and colorful Parisian city scene by Australian Mollie Flaxman. Captured in a very impressionist manner 'The Bastille' which was a fortress in Paris, known formally as the Bastille Saint-Antoine. With delightful details like a horse and buggy and pedestrians walking about their day. This whimsical painting is filled with character and charm from the Mid-20th Century. Each brushwork is precious and the depictions of the buildings create a playful atmosphere. This painting is signed and titled by the artist 'M. Flaxman' lower right and it comes comes housed in a beautiful gold tone wood carved frame with linen liner and it is ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso.

Mollie Flaxman was born in Sydney, Australia in 1912. She studied at the East Sydney Technical College and the Royal Art Society. A well-known watercolorist, she was a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW winning several awards Mollie’s paintings have been purchased by the Art Gallery of NSW and the Australian National Gallery Canberra. She exhibited in solo shows from 1954 in Brisbane, Sydney Melbourne, and Canberra. As a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute, her works were included in exhibitions in New York in 1976, New Zealand in 1975, and 1977-78 Cheltenham UK. Mollie Flaxman won awards in provincial and regional art shows and her works are held by the National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of NSW. She died in 2004.
PROVENANCE: Lilac Gallery Collection. Acquired by the gallery from a Private collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

Johann Berthelsen was born in Copenhagen in 1883, the 7th of seven children, to Conrad and Dorothea Karen Berthelsen. His parents were involved in artistic and professional circles. In 1890, his mother brought the children to America, settling in Manistee, Michigan, with her sister's family. They would eventually move to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a teenager, Johann was actively involved in choirs and singing groups. And he always loved to draw and paint, and while he was too impatient to take well to schoolwork, and never went beyond the 5th grade.
Although he worked in several trades, Johann's mind and heart were always with the arts. As his voice matured, he also always wanted to be an actor, and at the age of 18 moved to Chicago where he reconnected with an old friend who was studying voice at the Chicago Musical...

Hannig, born in Hirschberg, Germany on 27 February 1883, came to America with his parents at the age of seven. He attended school in the southwest suburbs before the family settled in Chicago. Young Henry enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where Lawton Parker became his mentor. He made ends meet by working in industrial design and illustration.
By 1908 he was a pupil in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where students followed the traditional European drawing curriculum, beginning with the copying of master engravings and drawing after plaster casts, then concentrating on the nude figure.
