About the Item

The Brook, 19th Century by Frederick Richard LEE (1798-1879) sales to $225,000 Large 19th Century English country landscape at a brook with figures talking, oil on canvas by Frederick Richard Lee. Excellent quality and condition example of Lee's landscape painting, he was the a natural successor to Constable, painting prolifically throughout England's countrysides. Signed and presented in its original antique gilt frame. Old artists label verso by Lee, partially indistinct though possibly "Brook, Barnstaple". It is one of the largest examples of the artists work probably painted for exhibition. Measurements: 50" x 43" framed approx Artist Biography Born 10 June 1798, in Barnstaple; died 4 June 1879, in the Cape Colony. Painter, watercolourist, draughtsman. Hunting scenes, landscapes, landscapes with figures, seascapes. Frederick Richard Lee started off in the services and fought one campaign in Holland. He then studied at the Royal Academy in London, where he exhibited from 1834. He also took part in exhibitions at the British Institution where he was awarded a prize of 50 pounds in 1829. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1834 and an Academician in 1838. He stopped exhibiting after 1870 and spent the rest of his life travelling.
