A Cityscape Watercolor on canvas after Leon Pacunayen ( Philippine-Italy B 1935). This painting presents a a village on hillside, portrayed with a masterful use of color and texture. The earthy browns, greens, and oranges evoke a rustic, organic atmosphere, capturing a sense of place that feels both bustling and intimate. The structure of the village is intricate, with houses piled atop one another, creating a dynamic composition that leads the eye upwards toward what appears to be a prominent building or temple at the top. The strokes are loose yet deliberate, giving the impression of movement and life throughout the village, especially around the boats and figures at the bottom. The technique evokes a wet, almost watercolor-like blending, where the lines blur into one another, contributing to the overall vibrancy and depth of the piece. This style allows for a balance between abstraction and representation, allowing viewers to feel the essence of the scene without the need for fine detail. The layered effect of the painting emphasizes the interaction between the built environment and the natural landscape, with trees and other organic elements interspersed among the houses. The painting is presented in a silver metal and black frame. About the artist : Leon Pacunayen, born in 1935, is a renowned Filipino artist, known primarily for his mastery of watercolor painting. He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1957. His career began in the Philippines, where he exhibited at the Philippine Art Gallery (PAG) and won numerous awards, including the First Prize at the AAP annual art competition in 1959. His art focuses on landscapes, particularly using the wet technique to depict mountains and clouds with an emphasis on mass and space. In the 1960s, Pacunayen relocated to Italy to continue his artistic studies at the Regge Accademia di Belli Arti in Rome. Over his career, he has held solo exhibitions in both the Philippines and Italy, and his works have been showcased in prestigious galleries such as the Luz Gallery and the Museum of Philippine Art. He also received several international awards in Italy, including gold medals from the Premio Montecompatr and the Premio Republica di San Marino. Pacunayen’s works often feature somber, earthy tones, especially in his watercolors of rural and urban landscapes.
