Signed, verso, 'A Heinsbergen' for Antoon Heinsbergen (Dutch-American, 1894-1989), inscribed 'Painted in Paris from the top floor of the Grand Hotel Paris' and dated 1941. A panoramic view of early twentieth-century Paris with early automobiles, charabancs and pedestrians filling the boulevards converging on the Paris Opera beneath sunny blue skies. Painter and theatrical designer, Antoon Heinsbergen immigrated to Los Angeles as a small boy and first studied at the Chouinard Art School and the Otis Art Institute. A substantial, early twentieth-century California coastal landscape showing the Pacific Coast's Monterey Bay on a sunny day with lightly scudding clouds against an azure sky. A particularly fine work with jewel-like, spring flowers scattered along the grassy bluff and a panoramic view across the bay towards lavender coastal hills. This luminous California plein-air painting happily retains its original title-plate. Born in New York City, Dedrick Stuber first studied at the Art Students League and, later, with Julian Onderdonk and Clinton Peters. In 1920, he moved to Los Angeles where he became known primarily as a painter of California pastoral and marine scenes, preferring to paint his "plein air" works in the cool and shade of the early morning. Over the course of a long career, Stuber exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards. He was a member of the Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles and the Laguna Beach Art Association and his works are held in numerous private and public collections, including the permanent collection of The Smithsonian Museum and The Pasadena Art Museum. The scene is set in a luxuriant and blossoming garden-on which we can see a pergola vine training and an ionic column-outlined with fast and wide brush strokes of faint and pastel colours. In some parts of the background is revealed the preparatory layer, because it’s unfinished, but we can presume the presence of a light blue sky with some clouds, deducing it from a confrontation with the left side, where the sky was started. In the foreground a boy dressed up with a style reminding medieval echoes looks like observing a flower or a small animal that he’s holding, as the position of the fingers-that seems caressing something-make suppose.
