About the Item
Follower of Hubert Robert (1733-1808), French School, Oil on canvas. An accomplished oil painting depicting a romanticised landscape scene with silhouetted castle dominant on the left. Golden light beams through a stone archway near centre, drawing the viewer's gaze towards a strong male figure carrying a heavy load. A gentle river and foliage softens the scene, balancing the grand architectural elements with the natural landscape. The painting has been beautifully housed in an empire frame with elaborate swan and acanthus ornamentation. The frame has wonderful patina, and could quite possibly be original to the artwork. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
