About the Item
French oil on canvas landscape looking towards a port and the sea. The painting is not signed and is presented in a modern painted and gilt wood frame.
A beautiful landscape view looking towards a port and the sea, possibly painted from La Fontasse looking towards Cassis in the South of France. Cassis was an inspiration to so many of the Fauvists including Camoin, Derain and Manguin who all immortalised its charm in their paintings. The artist has captured all the deep reds and russets so characteristic of the soil in that part of the coast in France. The colour highlights are picked up by the red terracotta roofs of the buildings and the sails of the small boats. Above it all they have captured a green leafy canopy provided by the 'Pin Parasol' trees so characteristic of this coastline. The artist has used strong brush strokes and a palette knife to give great surface texture and movement to the painting.
