A striking impressionistic oil painting showing the broads, a network of lakes and rivers in Norfolk and Suffolk. Thomas Frederick Goodall (c.1857-1944) was considered to be an important player in the flourishing art scene of Victorian England. Many of his paintings are owned by the Walker Gallery, Liverpool, and he is best known for his river scene 'The Bow Net, 1886' which features an interesting article by Hope Kingsley entitled 'Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads'. The article discusses Goodalls partnership with the photographer Peter Henry Emerson (1856–1936). The pair published a book which aimed to document the quickly disappearing traditional life and customs of local people whose lives were deeply entwined with the broads. This wonderful impressionistic riverscape depicts a glowing sunset over the broads and is completed in atmospheric tones of yellow and pale blue, contrasted brilliantly by Goodall's use of rich burgundy. The organic colours and layering of paintwork perfectly captures the tranquil nature of the broads at dusk . The viewer is able trace the artist's moment and thought process through the quick and textural brush strokes, which are visible in the visceral oil paint. His use of layering and expressive mark making gives a depth and perspective to the landscape, as the eye is continually drawn to numerous areas of interest. Inscribed 'EEL boat' referring to the Electric Eel boats popular with tourists visiting the broads due to the noiseless electric engines and novel aesthetic. Also titled and signed on the reverse. Image Size: 26.1 x 36cm (10.3" x 14.2") Sheet Size: 28 x 38cm (11" x 15") Artist Biography: Coastal, landscape and genre painter born at Anerley, Surrey who had a particular interest in Broadland subjects which he shared with pioneer photographer P. H. Emerson, with whom he collaborated on several publications. Goodall studied at the Royal Academy Schools and under John Sparkes at Lambeth School of Art and was a member of NEAC from its inaugural year in 1886. Goodall not only exhibited with the NEAC but between 1879 and 1901 at the RA as well as at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Grosvenor Gallery, Dudley Gallery, New Gallery and Royal Society of British Artists in London. Goodall also exhibited at the RBSA, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. In 1891 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He lived at Oulton Broad from the late 1890’s and is known to have worked on the river Blyth. Works by him are located in Norwich Castle Museum and Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. Goodall died at Billericay, Essex.
