About the Item
It's the dream. One going back centuries. The glossy canals instead of streets reflecting the delicate hues of adjacent buildings, yes. But especially when these waterways are dotted with such an alluring form of transport. English king Charles II of England put forth his request to the Venetian Senate in 1660 for two gondolas, to be accompanied by several Venetian boatmen, to ply the waters of his new "canal" being dug in St James Park. Gondolas were also seen conveying aristocrats around the Nymphenburg Palace in Bavaria in the mid 1700s. A plaything then for the rich and entitled, like a Lamborghini today. Back then, La Serenissima could spare a few; there were some 8000 to 10,000 in operation. But only 400 or so operate today, conveying tourists like these elegantly garbed visitors, who likewise savor the dream.
