Vintage American Industrial Modernist Landscape Oil Painting, ca 1930’s

ca 1930’s

About the Item

This is an unsigned but wildly expressionist American industrial landscape that dates to the 1930’s. It exudes drama and color and really is the essence of the WPA period of American art meeting expressionism of the same or slightly earlier period. The paint was liberally applied in certain areas to creat texture and depth. The composition is of a group of industrial farming buildings, possibly in the Midwest or western part of the East Coast. They dance about the rolling landscape with associated telephone poles or electrical lines that were signature elements to images and paintings of that period. Primary colors - red, blue, green and yellow are used to depict the various strong forms. The swirling sky with horizontal clouds are a contrasting backdrop to the vertical building and object forms. The oil on canvas measures 18” high by 20” wide. It is not signed but there are numerous pencil markings on the rear stretchers that may reveal something about the artist. Some seem to be framing notes. The word “Swift” is evident in one spot. The painting was framed with the vintage light grey and gold edged wide cove molding as shown. The framing label on the back relates to the frame when it housed a previous work, not the present one. The overall framed measurements are 23 1/2” x 25 1/2” making it a sizable work. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition and ready to add some visual energy to the wall or space of your choice. It’s a shame the painting was not signed as it is clearly the work of a confident and talented artist of the early twentieth century.
