E. E. Bradley
Rare English Landscape Oil Painting - Harrow on the Hill, 1883 by E. E. Bradley

About the Item

Rare, beautifully detailed oil painting on board of “Harrow o the Hill”, on a bright summer’s day. Though not signed on the front, it is signed twice verso “E.E. Bradley” and titled as stated. It is also dated 1883. The artist, E. E. Bradley, was very talented as his attention to detail and delineation of the scene is very competent. It depicts a long and sweeping view to the historic village of Harrow on the Hill, northwest of London. Silhouetted against the sky is the spire of Saint Mary’s Church, situated at the crest of The Hill. The bucolic landscape in the foreground portrays Harrow before it became a dense suburb within Greater London after the turn of the century. Framed by trees, Bradley composed the scene to great advantage and chose a mainly sunny day to accentuate sun and shadow casting over the rolling landscape. The oil on board measures 9 1/2” x 13 1/4” and is executed on G. Romney & Co. Flemish ground milled board of the period. It is housed in a birdseye maple veneered frame of the period. Overall measurements of the frame are 14” x 17”. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition with no visible issues to report. This romantic late 19th century oil painting of view of the countryside on the edge of London in 1883 is ready to hang and enjoy.
