Signed lower left, 'Pogacar' for Vincent Pogacar (American, 1929-1997) and painted circa 1985. A cabinet-sized study of ocean water breaking against beach rocks to roll onto sand. A well-executed example by this California artist. Vincent Pogacar moved from New York to Sacramento, where he began teaching painting in the 1980s. Pogacar exhibited throughout the 1970s and 80s in California and Nevada.

Trained in the Hudson River School tradition, Smillie successfully adapted to changing U.S. tastes and growing interest in European trends.
