When she was 5, the family moved to Circle, N.D. Following high school in Circle, she attended Eastern Montana State Normal School in Billings, and became an elementary school teacher. In 1937, she married Wayne Fenner, a mining engineer. They had three sons. She taught at Cardwell, MT until the family moved to California in 1952.
