Willard Metcalf
Poppies in the Forest

c. 1880s

About the Item

"Poppies in the Forest," painted by Willard Metcalf, is a vibrant and captivating depiction of nature's splendor. Metcalf, a prominent American artist associated with the Impressionist movement, is known for his ability to capture the beauty of nature with a delicate touch. In this painting, Metcalf presents a thick woodland scene where bright red poppies stand out vividly against the dark and verdant backdrop of the forest. The interplay of bold color and deep shadow creates a dynamic composition, with dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy, illuminating the poppies and enhancing their brilliance. The rich, green foliage and the earthy tones of the forest floor provide a harmonious contrast, emphasizing the striking beauty of the flowers. Metcalf's brushwork, characterized by loose, expressive strokes, imparts a sense of movement and spontaneity to the scene. This painting has been lined but comes in excellent condition with frame!

This, in turn, imbued his paintings of the rugged landscapes and seascapes of New England...
