About the Item

"Sausalito" Harbor and Angel Island Mountains - Boats Oil on Canvas 1963 Detailed and exceptional painting of "Sausalito" Harbor and Angel Island Mountain by William (Bill) Frederick Dorhmann. (American, 1906-1989). Dohrmann studied at the California School of Fine Art, New York School of Fine Arts, and in Paris at Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Born in San Francisco in 1906 he lived for many years in Burlington, California and in 1959 settled in Sausalito, California. An Impressionist, his work includes landscapes of Marin County and scenes of the sail boats and ships on San Francisco Bay. This idyllic setting was just right. He worked in watercolors, pastel oil, black and white line drawing and block prints, developing a unique style that was pleasing to a great many people. His work may be found in collections and private homes all over the world. “He secretly considered himself the mayor of Sausalito,” confesses his daughter. He would stand outside and hold court. He talked to everybody and always had a twinkle in his eye for the pretty ladies. He personified the Left Bank artist who quietly captures some of the most beautiful natural settings in the most unpretentious way. Bill was encouraged to pursue his interest by his aunt, sensing his appreciation of art, she took him to San Francisco museums and later to the Panama Pacific Exposition in I9I5. He went on to attend many prestigious schools including the California School of Fine Arts, atop Nob Hill, the New York School of Fine Arts and the Atelier Grand Chaumiere in Paris. Bill's grandfather was president of the Yosemite Park and Curry Company. So it was natural that he would spend some time there and as it turned out he became a park guide.
