Housed in a period (original) frame, outer dimensions measure 35 ½ x 47 inches. Canvas size is 26 x 38 inches. William H.M. Cox was a portrait and landscape painter. He painted portraits of well-known Colorado pioneers and probably the first Colorado Springs portrait painter. Cox moved to Texas in 1886 and worked in Virginia in the late nineteenth century. Today, his portraits of Fitzhugh Lee and Philip W. McKinney are in the Virginia State Capitol. Provenance: Norman Hawley Meldrum, Denver, Colorado Estate of Dale Anderson, Buffalo, Wyoming (by descent from the above) Meldrum served as Secretary of State (1879-1885) and Lieutenant Governor of Colorado (1887-1889). During this time he became a friend and patron of WHM Cox
