About the Item

Original oil on canvas painting by the well known British painter, William Henry Mander. Signed lower left. Titled “On the Llugury, North Wales” and signed by the artist verso as well. Circa 1885. Condition is excellent. The painting is housed in its original gold leaf frame in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 31 by 40.5 inches. The Afon Llugwy doesn’t linger long, but in its brief journey manages to become one of the best-known rivers in North Wales. Its source is Ffynnon Llugwy, a remote lake high in the Carneddau range in Snowdonia, before running past Capel Curig, plunging over Swallow Falls towards its rendezvous with the River Conwy. One of the most popular things to do in Betws-y-Coed is to sit on the rocky riverbank and listen to the roar of the young river as it passes beneath the stone Pont y Pair, the Bridge of the Cauldron. Soon afterwards it reaches the river Conwy, adding its considerable force for the push north to the sea. William Henry Mander was a Birmingham landscape painter who painted views in the Midlands and North Wales in a style similar to the late manner of Benjamin Williams Leader. Indeed he was so taken with North Wales that he moved from the Midlands to Dollgelau in 1899 where he lived for five years before moving to Lincoln. Shortly after he moved to Sheffield before returning to his native Birmingham in 1907. The prevailing style of Mander’s painting is innovative; and his pictures, seen in isolation, are always impressive. Their effect is achieved by expressing mood through colour, usually of a rich palette, with an almost mystical feel of movement. Between 1881 and 1914 he exhibited regularly at the R.B.S.A. one hundred and twenty two works in all, landscapes, rural scenes and river scenes. Titles included Scene near Trefriw, North Wales (1898) and Stepping Stones in the Conway (1899). Mander also exhibited seven works at the Royal Cambrian Academy and fourteen at the Royal Hibernian Academy.
