A striking winter landscape by William Lester Stevens (1888–1969). Painted in Stevens signature expressive style, this work showcases bold brushwork and a rich tonal palette. As a founding member of the Rockport Art Association and a key figure in American impressionism, Stevens masterfully conveys both atmosphere and structure. Signed lower right.

William Lester Stevens
William Lester Stevens was born in Rockport, Massachusetts, in 1888. He first studied with Parker Perkins and then attended the Boston Museum School as a student of William Tarbell, Frank Benson, Philip Hale and William Paxton. Stevens taught at Princeton and Boston Universities and by 1964, had won more awards than any other living artist. Stevens, along with his friend Aldro Hibbard, was instrumental in organizing the Rockport Art Association in 1921. Stevens was also a member of the Boston School and opposed to the abstraction of art. He became well known for his landscapes, views of everyday life and portraits. Stevens died in 1969.

Corot provides a transition from the sharp academic style that ruled in his day with focus on the natural world and the lyrical expressiveness of one's work. With her "Plein Air Paintings", Jane Chapin is part of one of the largest art movements in history. Her paintings carry human emotions. We can read her moods and feelings with places that carry deep remembrances for the artist that go beyond the descriptive.
