About
Stunning English rural setting landscape by one of England's best-loved painters.
William George Meadows was born in Mountnessing, Essex in 1825, the son of the artist James Meadows Snr (1788-1864). He was the brother of the James Edwin Meadows (1828-1888), Alfred John (1833-1894), Edwin Lewis Meadows (1838-1907), and Arthur Joseph Meadows (1843-1907) who were also artists. His grandfather and namesake William Meadows, was an actor and tenor singer. Meadows was tutored by his father and initially found work with him as a scene painter in the London theatres.
He lived in St Pancras and Hampstead and also lived in Poole. He spent most of his life painting the views of Essex, London, and Dorset but also traveled around painting views of the South Coast and Scotland. He spent time in Venice producing a number of highly skilled works of the canals and famous landmarks such as these fine examples.
Although he does not appear to have exhibited at the London galleries he did exhibit at the Royal Hibernian Academy. Examples of his paintings can be found in a number of public collections including the Doncaster Mansion House, Gainsborough Old Hall, Milntown House and Rotherham Museum.
This size and composition would work in many different rooms in a home, such as a dining area, bedroom, entrance hallway, or study
This type and quality of painting would have been painted for the wealthy British patrons for either their country houses or their grand townhouses in areas in London like Mayfair, Belgravia and Chelsea, and Kensington
